REQUIEM CONCERT AND EXHIBITION

«THE GENOCIDE OF THE ROMA DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR»

Project description: In 2017, the Kherson City Association of Young Roma organized a concert-requiem dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Roma genocide during World War II. The event took place at the Kherson Music School and united the community in honoring the tragic pages of the history of the Roma people.

Project goal:

  • Overcoming ethnic stereotypes and forming a tolerant attitude towards the Roma community
    through children’s art.
  • Promoting Roma culture, customs and history among children.
  • Creating a positive image of Roma from early childhood.

Program of the event:

  • Performing vocal and instrumental compositions that reflect the pain and tragedy of the events of the Roma Holocaust.
  • Screening of documentary videos about the history of the genocide of the Roma people.
  • Poetry readings dedicated to the memory of the victims

Historical context:

The concert-requiem recalled the terrible events of the Second World War, when thousands of Roma died at the hands of the Nazis. Special attention was paid to the importance of preserving memory and preventing similar tragedies in the future

The significance of the project:

The event was an important step in strengthening historical memory and intercultural dialogue. It contributed to the realization of a shared responsibility to prevent discrimination and genocide. The Kherson City Association of Young Roma will continue to work on projects that preserve the memory of the tragedies and strengthen cultural ties between communities.
